In Awe Of - Maddison Kellie
In starting Illustrated in Colour we set out to share our encounters with fun, enlightening, driven, unusual, inspiring places, adventures, sounds & people, in hope that those who stumble upon our content may leave feeling enlightened, driven or inspired in the same way. As a result, there’d be a whole bunch of people, more and more eager to do stuff they really enjoy, for the fun of it, to motivate themselves to get out there and live a life illustrated in some seriously vivid colours. Maddison Kellie is just the kind of chick to lead a movement like this single-handedly, and most-likely without even realising.
You can spot the creative goodness oozing out of this girl from a mile away and after hanging around her for too long, I warn you, it gets a little infectious. With a wicked eye for capturing beauty in the mundane, and a heart of gold too, she’s a great source of inspiration for us at Illustrated, and one whom I think you’ll find sparks something within you too. Her film photographs are consistently taaaight, each roll as visually gratifying as the last. With a number of online features like this one up her sleeve already, not to mention collaborations with several home-grown businesses like Drift Essentials and The Salty Merchants, Mads is doing great things, and many of us are following along for the ride.
I sat down with Ms Kellie - well I shot her a message from Japan - to see if I could figure out her fool-proof formula for being the epic lady & photography wizard that she is. For maximum viewing pleasure check these out on a computer screen, rather than the tiny one you’re holding in your hands...
NAME: Maddison Kellie
GENETIC MAKE-UP: Half Australian - Half Kiwi
FUN FACT: I can completely close one eye without squinting the other.
YOU ROCK AT A LOT OF STUFF, BUT JUST SO EVERYONE GETS THE PICTURE - WHAT ARE YOU ALL ABOUT?
Me?.. I'm just your average chick. But to be honest I don't even quite know what I'm all about thus far… apart from burritos. I'm all about burritos.
YOU HAIL FROM THE BIG SMOKE THAT IS THE GOLD COAST, HOW DID GROWING UP BY THE BEACH HELP FOSTER YOUR DESIRE TO BE AND DO ALL THINGS CREATIVE?
Well I'm actually originally from ol Toowoomba, more creek side than beach side. And I moved to the GC in 08'. Being surrounded by all things water I feel has compelled me to be fluid; in life and creativity.
I LOVE THAT. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT LAID BACK ATTITUDE FILTER THROUGH YOUR PHOTOS (YOU'RE NOT SO CLUELESS AFTER ALL). SPEAKING OF - THE WORLD OF FILM PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN INTRIGUING ONE, BUT DEFINITELY ONE THAT FEW VENTURE INTO. WHAT GOT YOU INTO THE ANALOG SIDE OF THINGS?
Damn right. A buddy ol pal was once holding an olympus OM10 in his hot little hands and it pretty much felt like love at first site.. with the camera. I told my rents about this groovy gadget, days later I had one of my own. I had never really taken photos before so this was the beginning of my photo-taking ventures.
WHO ARE SOME OTHER PEOPLE - MATES OR STRANGERS - WHO PRODUCE WORK THAT YOU REALLY LOVE OR ADMIRE?
Gee this is a toughie. There are many. Grant Noble, Richard Hodder and Ellanor Webb are the first to mind, and boy do they take a mean shot!
I'M JUST GONNA MOVE ON BEFORE I START TEARING UP. IF YOU COULD STEP INTO ONE PERSON’S LIFE, DEAD OR ALIVE, AND SHOOT THEIR PORTRAIT AND THE BITS AND PIECES THAT MAKE UP THEIR LIFE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Oh Patti Smith fo sho!!!
LAST YEAR YOU VENTURED OFF TO EUROPE FOR FAR TOO LONG, HOW DID THAT TRIP + THE CONCEPT OF TRAVEL IN GENERAL INFLUENCE YOUR CREATIVE OUTPUT?
Not long enough I'd say. Travel has broadened my horizons a whole lot and it's made me want to continuously wander the world more than I ever have. It has also made me want to do more than just take photographs of times I've experienced, but also write about these times as well.
GREAT COMBO, SNAPS AND WORDS. ANY UPCOMING TRIPS ON YOUR AGENDA?
It really is, calculates more of a story to what there already is. You betchya, I'm heading to the states for 2 months in August, very excited; it's my first time there. Then after that adventure, I'll be flying to NZ for an unknown amount of time. Trips forever.
YAHOO. ASIDE FROM PHOTOGRAPHY, WHAT OTHER FUN MEDIUMS DO YOU ENJOY WORKIN’ WITH?
I'm really into doing collage work at the moment, experimenting with different paints, texturising and all that jazz.
AND DO YOU SEE YOURSELF SWAYING CLOSER TOWARDS THE WORLD OF COLLAGING IN THE FUTURE?
I couldn't see why not, I do enjoy playing around with different feels.. but at the moment I'm all eyes on photography.
OF COURSE. WHAT’S A PERSONAL OR PROFESSIONAL DREAM YOU'VE GOT - ONE YOU WILL ALWAYS HOLD ONTO (UNTIL YOU REACH IT OBVIOUSLY)?
To build my profile enough to make it a real deal living out of it. That would be pretty damn cool.
AND IF YOU’RE NOT TAKING PHOTOS, OR SLINGING CUPS OF COFFEE AT SUNHOUSE, WHERE COULD I FIND YOU? I MEAN NOT WHERE COULD I FIND YOU BECAUSE I’D JUST GIVE YOU A BUZZ AND ASK. BUT WHERE WOULD ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE FIND YOU?
Probably splashing around in the ocean somewhere along the coast, tucking into a burrito or straight chillin' at home in the Currumbin valley..
WHAT A DREAM.
