GirlGaze

I can’t remember which instagram account - or even sponsored ad - recommended I follow @girlgaze a couple of weeks ago, but boy am I glad I caved for once and did.

Aside from being great feed fodder, the mission behind the project is tops (take a squiz: http://www.girlgaze.tv), and is going to culminate in an exhibit in New York in September (Sophie, I’m sending you).

It’s run by some awesome people, including bad bitch Sam Taylor-Johnson and the Inez half of Inez and Vinoohd, but they’re mostly relying on discovering and supporting developing photographers through Instagram. By diversifying the perspectives of those behind the lens, hopefully what we see photographed and how it is photographed will grow too.

I’ve just enjoyed falling down insta-black holes with some of the pictures they’ve posted. Here are some of the photos and photographers I’ve loved so far. Follow them, screenshot them, or don’t, I’m not the boss of you.

A self portrait by Francesca Woodman, taken in the 70s. Woodman died age 22, and her work only became more widely known posthumously. Highly recommended reading the details of the rest of her biography in the captions of some of her other pictures, share on the GirlGaze Instagram.
